TELEPHONE HYBRIDthe telephone interview facility for the control
roomThe limited quality of telephone commu-nication is a problem when
the reportertransmits hot news over the telephone ei-ther for live
broadcasting or recording. TheSTUDER TELEPHONE HYBRID processesthe
signals between the telephone line andthe studios audio circuits in
such a way thatmaximum transmission quality is achieved.In its design,
the following technical require-ments had to be taken into
consideration:• Compensation of telephone level fluctua-tions.•
Attenuation of sidetone signals.• Correct termination of the telephone
line.• Compliance with the regulations of the te-lephone
company.EFFECTIVE SIDETONE REDUCTIONthe key element is a hybrid
circuit that hasbeen expanded to an automatically adjust-ing bridge.
It splits the bidirectional tele-phone line into a studio audio line
with se-parate transmit and receive paths.An electronic feed-back loop
ensures dy-namic matching to the prevailing line condi-tions. Line
impedances consisting of R andC components are simulated and
providecorrect line termination. This prevents aloss of quality In the
announcer signal fromthe studio due to superposed sidetone
levelcomponents from the telephone network.EASY OF OPERATIONNo further
operating is required after theTELEPHONE HYBRID has been connectedto
the AC outlet and to the telephone line.Typical example:After the
connection to the called party hasbeen established, the announcer
transfersthe call through the TELEPHONE HYBRID tothe mixing
console.The announcer can now conduct a conver-sation for live
broadcasting or recordingthrough the studio microphone. With a
cor-responding configuration of the TELE-PHONE HYBRID in the 19" rack
panel unit, itis possible to conduct a telephone conver-sation

19" RACK PANEL UNITA universal housing designed as a 19" rackpanel
unit contains the power supply andprovides space to accomodate three
plug-in Euro-standard circuit boards. One cardlocation is reserved for
the DUAL RELAYunit, the other two are available for one ortwo HYBRID
modules. All alignment con-trols required for putting the unit into
ser-vice are located behind the removable frontpanel. The connectors
are located on therear panel:XLR sockets for the audio input and
outputsignals. Binding posts are provided for con-necting the
telephone lines. A multicontactsocket permits connection of the only
ope-rating control, an external selector switch,which may be placed at
the mixing console.DUAL RELAY MODULEThis module is designed for
operation withone or two HYBRID modules and is, there-fore, equipped
with two identical functiongroups. Each group fulfills three
specificfunctions:• Switching relayFor switching the telephone line
from thetelephone set via the HYBRID modules tothe mixing console
input. Can be actuat-ed from an external selector switch.• Holding
chokeIt supplies the correct DC resistance forthe relay in the
exchange (direct line toexchange, no local switch board).•
Compensation of the line impedanceTwo trimmer potentiometers for
coarsematching of line impedances with induc-tive component.The DUAL
RELAY module can also be or-dered as a separate item for direct
installa-tion in audio production equipment.HYBRID MODULEtwo locations
in the 19" rack panel unit arereserved for either one or two HYBRID
mo-dules.Perfect matching of the studio and tele-phone lines to the
prevailing levels is pos-sible with the trimmer potentiometers
ac-cessible from the front. The attack point ofthe automatic control
can be adjusted, ifnecessary, with an additional trimmer
po-tentiometer.Automatic matching begins as soon as mo-dulation occurs
on the signal lines.An integrated noise generator masks crosstalk that
frequently occurs on telephonelines so that it becomes unintelligible,
as re-quired by PTT regulations. The SN ratio canbe adjusted with a
trimmer potentiometer.The HYBRID module can also be ordered asa
separate item for installation in audio pro-duction equipment.

TELEPHONE HYBRID WITH NOISE GATEThis special version of the HYBRID
modulefeatures an additional circuit that sup-presses any noise and
cross talk in the ab-sence of modulation on the telephone
line.TELEPHONE HYBRID WITH CURRENTADJUSTThis version of the TELEPHONE
HYBRIDhasbeen expanded with a holding-current pre-selector and is
suited for use in countries,where the prescribed holding current
forthe exchange relay is set by the subscriber.

SYSTEM is a TE-LEPHONE HYBRID that has been expandedto an autonomous
telephone OB unit. Thelevel of the Input signals can be controlledby
the reporter, independently of the mixingconsole in the studio.The
TELEPHONE SYSTEM is equipped withan additional Euro-standard module
with in-tegrated microphone/line amplifier andfeatures an external
remote control unit.All control and monitoring elements are ar-ranged
on the remote control unit:• Level trimmer potentiometer for
micro-phone and telephone input.• VU-meter for checking the audio
outputlevel.• Headphone socket with volume control.• Push button for
switching over the tele-phone line with visual status
indication.OUTSIDE CALLERTYPICAL APPLICATIONAfter the reporter has
established telephon-ic connection with the called party, heswitches
over to the TELEPHONE SYSTEMand starts the tape recorder.He can listen
through the headphones con-nected to the remote control unit andspeaks
into the microphone.The reporter has access to a level controlwith
which he can mix his own componentand the one of the called party to
the mas-ter.The output level is indicated by a VU-meteron the remote
control unit. The volume forthe headphones can be adjusted with a
se-parate volume control.RACK PANEL UNITThe same type of 19" rack
panel unit with in-tegrated power supply that is used for theTELEPHONE
HYBRID also accommodatesthe control electronics.A multiconductor cabel
connects the re-mote control unit with the rack panel unit.The
balanced and floating microphoneinput and line output are wired to
