Introduction

This document helps you to understand channelized E1/PRI network modules.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

This document is not restricted to specific software and hardware versions.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

For more information on document conventions, refer to the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions.

Background Information

The channelized E1/ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) modules are available with one or two DB-25 E1 ports with balanced or unbalanced interfaces. The channelized E1/ISDN PRI modules can receive and transmit data bidirectionally at the E1 rate of 2.048 Mbps and provide up to 30 virtual channels per E1 port. The Network Modules also include an RJ-45 Fast Ethernet port for LAN connectivity.

Features

Feature

Description

Fast Ethernet Connector

RJ-45 100 BaseT interface (no MII port, no fiber option).

E1 Connector

DB 15 connector.

E1 Mode

These network modules can be field configured to balanced (120 ohm) or unbalanced (75 ohm) operation by changing jumpers on the network module.

Fast Ethernet Speed

10 or 100 Mbps speed, auto-sensing.

Fast Ethernet Duplex

Full- or half-duplex, auto-negotiating (at 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps).

  • Default is auto-negotiate.

  • If peer does not negotiate, runs in half-duplex.

  • Can force full-duplex with full-duplex interface configuration command.

The no full-duplex command returns to the default mode, auto-negotiation. The no full-duplex command does not configure the interface for half-duplex.

ISL

Supported in hardware, requires Cisco "IOS® Plus" Feature set.

Fast Etherchannel

Not supported.

E1 Support

  • Same features and functionality as NM-1CE1B, NM-1CE1U, NM-2CE1B, NM-2CE1U (with the addition of configurable impedance).

  • Each port is configured independently. You can configure one port for ISDN and the other for channelized E1.

  • Supports framed G.704. For unframed G.703 see the VWIC-1MFT-G703.

There is no restriction on the number of these modules that can operate in a chassis.

Note: The Cisco IOS software releases provided are typically the minimum version required to support the platform, module, or feature in question. Use the Software Advisor (registered customers only) to choose appropriate software for your network device: match software features to Cisco IOS and CatOS releases, compare IOS releases, or find out which software releases support your hardware. The Software Advisor and other tools are available in TAC Tools and Utilities.

Configuration

Each interface on the Cisco 3600 series is configured as a slot/unit number. On the 1- or 2-Port ISDN PRI/Channelized E1 Network Module, the Fast Ethernet interface is addressed as interface fastethernet <slot>/<port> and the E1 interfaces are addressed as controller <slot>/<unit>. Concurrent ISDN BRI and PRI module support requires Cisco IOS 11.3(3)T.

Refer to Configuring Channelized E1 and Channelized T1 for configuration assistance.

Configure the interface as you would normally configure a Channelized E1/PRI interface on any other router.
